Well written, descriptive narrative about history, landscape and nature relating to the spiritual tradition of St. Cuthbert. The author has written previously about Scotland and I would say the book is 75% about Scotland and 25% relates to St. Cuthbert. In the tradition of Descartes, whose skeptical mind did not want to succumb to porous spirituality and created a Buffered Self, the author encounters this spiritually porous landscape but presents a rigid, buffered self "only passing through." Moffat is a wonderful writer and historian of the Scottish Borders, and he does not disappoint with this one, which is a personal journey, in more ways than one.
