Ebook About “A lighthearted memoir of new friends, delicious food, and culture shock . . . A brisk chronicle of a family’s (mis)adventures in Vietnam” (Kirkus Reviews). During the 2008 recession, Karin Esterhammer was laid off from her job as a travel writer for the Los Angeles Times. No longer able to afford their comfortable lifestyle, she and her husband sold everything they had, rented out their house, and took their young autistic son to Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam. They thought that teaching English and living cheap for a year would help get them back on their feet. Boy, were they wrong . . . So Happiness to Meet You is the funny, inspiring, and eye-opening true account of one family’s quest to regain their financial footing while living anything but the high life. Esterhammer tells of her family’s trials, adventures, and victories in adapting to a foreign culture, overcoming the language barrier, and enduring the kind of heat and humidity that could drive a soul insane. She also paints an endearing portrait of neighbors who unabashedly stared into windows, kept cockroaches for luck, taught Karin how to shop and cook, and ultimately helped her find joy without Western trappings. Full of love, laughter—and a surprising amount of barbecued rat—this is a “loopy adventure and charming cautionary tale for anyone who’s ever dreamed of packing it in and starting over somewhere new” (Mark Haskell Smith, author of Naked at Lunch and Baked).Book So Happiness to Meet You: Foolishly, Blissfully Stranded in Vietnam Review :
One of the most delightful books I've ever stumbled upon - with no knowledge of Vietnam other than "war", where too many of my age-group died, I had no idea what to expect of this memoir. But I hadn't read more than the first short - very short, actually - chapters before I realized I had come upon something very special, a book that inspires, entertains, enlightens and charms on virtually every page.Part of my delight, I'm sure, is that twice, I've packed up and moved to a foreign country - as a late-teen to Mexico, and as a 50-something, to Israel. In neither case did I have the local language before I went, so I encountered some of the same difficulties as did the author - although, thank goodness, mastering the various tones that define Vietnamese words wasn't something I had to deal with. I also had to find work, another similarity - but neither time did I have an autistic child with me, which offers a whole new layer of issues for this author. But what a delightful book it is! I know this is a book I will read over and over, no doubt finding new insights to inspire me, new things to giggle at, every time I read it. Don't miss this one - really! Most of the expats in Vietnam live in the ritzy Districts, and have a lot of luxuries. This couple didn't do that. They moved into a relatively poor district- because that's what they could afford- and got integrated into the life of the neighborhood. That was fascinating! It must have been hard to navigate life there with little common language- despite everyone's best efforts... but goodwill won out, and she and her son were accepted into the vibrant life of their neighborhood.I also admire the author, because there is no way I would have been able to cope the way she did. Life was SO different! but she was able and willing to embrace it, and her neighbors recognized that, and embraced her right back.If you are curious about how it would be to immerse yourself, long-term, into a very foreign culture- this books demonstrates both the joys of it, and some of the difficulties.Personally- I love fish-out-of-water stories, true or fictional, and this was an excellent one- both enthusiastic and nuanced. It's not really a travel book, though- it's all about actually LIVING in a local neighborhood, for around 2.5 years.
