Ebook About
In 1845, British explorer Sir John Franklin set out on a voyage to find the North-West Passage – the sea route linking the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific. The expedition was expected to complete its mission within three years and return home in triumph but the two ships, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, and the 129 men aboard them disappeared in the Arctic. The last Europeans to see them alive were the crews of two whaling ships in Baffin Bay in July 1845, just before they entered the labyrinth of the Arctic Archipelago. The loss of this British hero and his crew, and the many rescue expeditions and searches that followed, captured the public imagination, but the mystery surrounding the expedition's fate only deepened as more clues were found. How did Franklin's final expedition end in tragedy? What happened to the crew? The thrilling discoveries in the Arctic of the wrecks of Erebus in 2014 and Terror in 2016 have brought the events of 170 years ago into sharp focus and excited new interest in the Franklin expedition. This richly illustrated book is an essential guide to this story of heroism, endurance, tragedy and dark desperation.

Book Sir John Franklin’s Erebus and Terror Expedition: Lost and Found Review :

Without a doubt, the finest review of the 1845 Franklin Expedition to date. While it can't go into the depth of detail of the many previous scholarly works in the space available, it gives a succinct and (thankfully) unbiased overview. It also presents a number of fascinating bits of information, such as the complete crew rosters of the Erebus and Terror (right down to ranks, ages and home addresses!) , previous expeditions of all the officers and many of the ratings, and synopses of previous Arctic explorations and the subsequent rescue operations. The selection of illustrations is outstanding. It concludes with a chapter on the discovery of the wrecks of the Erebus in 2014, the Terror in 2016, and the lost rescue vessels Breadalbane (1980) and Investigator (2010). Although very little investigation has been done in the brief period of time since the discoveries, the author (Gillian Hutchinson) helpfully supplies the website of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England, where updates may be obtained, in addition to access to historical documents and other references. As one who has accumulated a sizeable library on the expedition and has had the good fortune to visit some of the areas Franklin explored, I find this book to be an excellent synopsis and ready reference guide, and highly recommend it, especially to those who are new to the subject.
My interest in the Franklin Expedition, and in polar exploration, generally, was inspired by watching the AMC miniseries "The Terror" earlier this year - my favorite narrative read that touched on the expedition was Michael Palin's recent book, "Erebus." This book - "Terror/Erebus - Lost/Found" - is abso0lutely fantastic - it takes you on the expedition from cradle to (figurative and literal) grave - including haunting photographs of the recent discovery of both ships - if you like material culture as much as I do, then you will be greatly pleased - I can't say enough good things about this book. Highly Recommended.
